PBC travelled up the the longest road trip in the competition last week. Taking on Sandgate, who have caused some problems for the Lions in recent times. With last weeks loss to Surfers still still burning the Lions were keen to make amends and get back on the win side of the ledger.
It was a successful trip to Lemke Road this time with all three grades recording strong wins.
What the coaches had to say;
Senior Coach – Chad Owens
It was a great response following the loss last week. Sandgate at Sandgate is a tricky game but the boys were up for it this time around.
The conditions meant that it was going to be a tight contest. At after half time we only held a 21 point advantage but had always looked threatening. Some minor adjustments were needed and adapt to the conditions a little better.
Our physicality at the ball and man was very good and it put them on the back foot. By the end of the third quarter our lead had jumped out to 52 with a brilliant 8 goal blitz.
The last quarter saw more of the same and we were able to run out convincing winners. I thought that we used the size of the ground very well and set up many attacking opportunities.
Across the lines we had winners everywhere. Our backline continued to work well together and shut down their dangerous forwards whilst providing plenty of rebound.
The mids worked hard and tackled and harassed the opposition into making mistakes.
The forwards particularly in the second half were very efficient and took their chances well and created a lot of space for each other.
With the bye coming up, the players have certainly earnt their weeks rest.
Huge game next Saturday at home against Mt Gravatt who are sitting second. Be great to see everyone there.
Reserves Coach – Ritchie Elliot
With the side losing our last two games, the encounter with a struggling Sandgate provided the perfect opportunity to regain much needed confidence and momentum. Due to late injuries and withdrawals we only went in with 20 players which gave the opportunity for big Lachie Blackmore to come up from the colts for his first reserves game this year.
Wet conditions greeted us with the heavens opening up just as we ran out and it stayed wet all game. Our pre match emphasis was on better ball control so this would now be challenging with the wet conditions setting in.
Our first half was pleasing, 7 goals to 2 at half time with encouraging work rate, run and effort at the contest. As coaches, we were pleased with the half given the difficult conditions. We were disappointed however with the 3rd quarter as our urgency fell away. Sloppy disposal was the result.
Credit to the boys though who picked the slack up again to finish with a 5 goal last quarter, a really good effort so three pleasing quarters to get us back on the winners list.
Matt McLaughlin had his best game since returning from injury, Nathan Carr got another bag in difficult conditions for forwards and our back six got back to their miserly best to only concede 3 goals all game. We also got Luke Marshall through unscathed in a promising first hit out after his long term injury.
Unfortunately we lost Lachlan McLeod and Matt Peck to hamstring injuries during the game, both boys showing great form until their respective injuries struck .
A week off now before we launch into the business end of the season. Well done Lions.
Colts Coach – Tim Deacon
It was good to get the points on Saturday at Sandgate and it’s a credit to the players for their discipline in sticking to the task. Sandgate tried to rough us up and we responded by playing some good team orientated footy and putting the score on the board.
Marly Hansen was exceptional with his work ethic and selfless efforts in pushing back to help out back line whilst Jesse Beame, once again, was relentless in his efforts to help the team and get in and get the hard ball .
Jayden Taylor was hard at it, tackling and chasing down opponents, hitting targets and was our tackle count leader.
Jack Barlow is organising our defence well and was again the general down back, intercepting and reading opposition mistakes and turning them into attack.
Kai George was persistent, presenting well at every forward entry and Lachy Blackmore was great in the ruck, giving us first use for most of the day.
We have had quite a few players promoted to reserves lately and we have had to play a few under 17s who have been great for us and they are more than welcome any time!
Big thanks to Dirk Koenan, Lachy Torpy, Hunter Hall and Dean Katsiris for playing up and giving us a chop out. Everyone has taken the situation on board and has lifted for the team which is pleasing.
Our footy is improving each week and if we become more accurate in our scoring we can give this show a big shake! We have come a long way since last year and the continual improvement is promising. We have 3 big tests in the next 3 weeks, we are gaining some momentum and need to be at the top of our game from here on.
It’s a big challenge and I’m sure we are up for it!
